On Farm Odor/Environmental Assistance Program (OFO/EAP)

NPPC

1998 through 2000

The OFO/EAP was created by the NPPC to meet the following goals: (1) raise the overall environmental stewardship of pork producers, (2) reduce the environmental risk associated with pork production, and (3) provide credibility to pork industry efforts through environmental responsibility.

SES was the third party verification entity for this program.  As the third party verification entity, SES provided independent technical review and implementation oversight of the program. Mr. Eric Hess, SES, participated on the national advisory board for this program in a non-voting status. The non-voting status ensured the company’s independent position. SES also assisted NPPC with the development of the OFO/EAP Assessor Certification Training Course and Manual and on-farm assessment checklists.

SES evaluated the effectiveness of the OFO/EAP through continued technical review and oversight of on-farm assessments, assessment reports, and producer implementation of report recommendations.

On Farm Assessment and Environmental Review (OFAER) Program

NPPC

March 2000 through 2002

OFAER is an expansion of NPPC’s OFO/EAP.  OFAER is a similar assessment-based voluntary program that is available to all livestock groups.  Initially, NPPC administered the program in cooperation with America’s Clean Water Foundation.  Around the time NPPC and the National Pork Board split; EMS, LLC took over management of the program

SES modified the OFO/EAP assessment tools and conducted pilot testing of generic assessment protocols at various livestock operations.  During this time, SES was the third party verification entity for the OFAER program.  SES oversaw assessments and evaluated the effectiveness of the program.

Odor Control Technology Evaluation Program

PSF

1999 to Present

SES developed and implemented testing protocols for evaluating the effectiveness of odor control technologies at a PSF’s operations to ensure that technologies were evaluated in an objective, scientific manner.  These testing protocols are a primary component of PSF’s Environmental Work Plan, which was developed as part of a settlement with Missouri’s Attorney General.  Based on the results of the testing program, SES subsequently prepared an Odor Control Plan. SES is currently conducting odor monitoring in conjunction with the producer at its farms on a biweekly basis and routinely evaluating the results of this monitoring.

Agricultural Environmental Technology Evaluation Program (ATEP)

NPPC

January 2000 to 2002

SES created a program of innovative technology evaluation designed to verify the performance of agricultural technologies.  ATEP was an NPPC program that was intended to verify the claims of technology developers with SES as the program’s verification entity.  Following successful completion of an ATEP evaluation, NPPC planned to provide a seal that the developer could use when marketing its technology.
