ODOR CONTROL AND MEASUREMENT
SES has extensive
experience with odors as an environmental issue. SES is not a
distributor for any specific odor control product or system. Because of
this, SES can objectively determine the best,
most cost-effective approach for each client.
Click on the link below for a presentation given by Rob Dobson of SES at the Water
Environment Federation Odors and VOC Conference in May 2002. It describes a
detailed evaluation of one odor-control technology at large swine farms in
Missouri.

SES also has
experience with different approaches to measuring odors. These include on-site evaluation using a
scentometer, off-site evaluation using olfactometry, and analysis of
specific odorous chemicals (e.g. hydrogen sulfide). This experience means that SES is well aware of
the benefits and limitations of each approach. SES can use this
experience to design a cost-effective and scientific approach to measuring
odors.
In 1998, the state of Missouri revised its odor rules for
concentrated animal feeding operations.
The revised rules included a standard for odors based on
olfactometry. SES conducted field
research showing that the proposed new standard was unworkable. As a
result, the state was forced to delay enforcement of this rule until a new
enforceable standard could be determined.
