SES worked closely with PSF to develop a comprehensive GIS as an
integral part of their data and farm management. The analysis includes a review of the
system currently being used and an assessment of
available systems. A key factor in
PSF’s decision to convert to using a comprehensive GIS program was whether or not their existing global positioning
satellite (GPS) data that had been compiled over several years could be
imported into the system. The data
conversion could not be accomplished with a direct import; rather it
required manipulation and developing specialized conversion algorithms so
the extensive database could be used. The SES team was able
to identify data errors among more than 65,000 GPS location files and
correct them so the data could be accurately converted and used in the
GIS. The SES GIS support,
especially in this case, proved to be much more cost effective than PSF
incorporating GIS data development in-house.
