GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL LIVESTOCK
PRODUCTION PRACTICES
These Good Environmental Livestock Production Practices
(GELPP) are compilations of best management practices (BMP) that are commonly
applied throughout confined livestock production operations. The GELPPs apply to all types of
concentrated livestock operations, including, but not limited to hogs, beef
cattle, dairy, meat birds and egg layers. There are separate GELPPs
addressing each of the five fundamental concentrated livestock production
risk areas: 1) General Site Conditions, 2) Production Areas, 3) Outdoor
Manure and Storm Water Storage, 4) Manure Utilization, and 5) Mortality
Management. The BMPs that have been incorporated in the GELPPs are
considered to be the fundamental environmental management practices that
are necessary for a livestock production operation to function in an
environmentally sound and protective manner. The BMPs that make up the GELPPs are
based on academic research, professional society publications, guidance
from governmental agencies, and the findings from nearly 2,000 on-farm
assessments conducted on concentrated livestock production operations
across the United States.
The GELPPs were further refined though their submittal to the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for approval as American
National Standards (ANS). During
this submittal, they were subject to an independent review by producers, academics,
engineers, government officials and other interested parties. Through this review process, the
standards were revised, and all reviewers and developers achieved consensus
on their final form. The April 5, 2002
edition of ANSIs Standards Action publication announces the final approval
of the GELPPs.
The GELPPs present essential environmental management and
protection practices in a standard format that can be applied across the
United States. The GELPPs allow this
broad application because they are designed as performance-based standards. The GELPPs provide concentrated livestock
operations a consistent and uniform guide about how to manage operations in
an environmentally sound manner, especially across wide geographic and
climatic areas. As ANS, the GELPPs
also will provide confined livestock producers the opportunity to obtain
independent certification of their environmental stewardship, and a basis
for developing an environmental management system. This independent certification could have
wide ranging implications on public perception, insurance or lending,
relative to a certified farm.
The GELPPs are applicable to any livestock operation that
plans to:
1) Minimize its potential to generate negative environmental
impacts;
2) Demonstrate good environmental stewardship; and,
3) Improve relationships with all parties directly or
indirectly affected by the operation.
The standards developer has created a training curriculum
directed at the interpretation, assessment/auditing and implementation of
the GELPPs. If you would like to
