Nutrient Management Planning - Iowa

NRCS

May 2004 – August 2004

SES was successful in the procurement of 5 separate contracts with the NRCS in Iowa to conduct nutrient management planning (NMP) for producers.  This work will be conducted in numerous counties throughout Iowa and will entail the preparation of NMPs for crop and livestock producers throughout Iowa.

National Nutrient Loading Project

NPPC

1998

SES staff compiled nutrient loading information to surface water for NPPC.  This project focused on the top 17 pork-producing states.  The project’s objective was to determine the relative contribution of nutrients to surface water from pork production compared with other agricultural and non-agricultural sources of nutrients.  SES summarized extensive data compiled from database searches and literature reviews in tables and charts and discussed the findings in a narrative summary.  The summary report discussed the mean annual nitrogen and phosphorus load by state, trends in source contributions, livestock influence on watersheds, nutrient loading in the Mississippi River Basin, nutrient contributions by livestock type, and potential future uses of the SPARROW model (primarily looking at trends over time).

Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan

Premium Standard Farms

April – June, 2000

SES completed the first substantial Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) in the U.S.  CNMPs are being mandated through the EPA, state agencies, and the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service to minimize environmental impacts emanating from land application of wastes from confined animal feedlots. The plan provides the user information to calculate and manage waste applications to minimize impacts. This program requires an extensive review of feedlot operations, environmental loading capacity of the wastes, and potential impacts to aquatic and terrestrial receptors of excess waste applications.

SES staff has been active participants in the development of CNMP guidelines and training requirements for certification of professionals producing CNMPs.

BMPs for pork production and land application of manure

NPPC

September 1998

SES compiled a list of environmental BMPs for concentrated livestock production to be included in the training materials for the OFO/EAP.

Odor Solutions Initiative (OSI)

NPPC

April 1998 to June 1998

The OSI was developed by the NPPC to evaluate technologies and systems to mitigate or reduce odor emissions from pork production facilities. As part of the OSI, SES worked closely with the NPPC, the USDA National Soil Tilth Laboratory, and university researchers to conduct an evaluation of odor sampling and analysis methods. SES conducted a preliminary review of available and potential methods for monitoring and quantifying odors, and designed a source sampling plan for odors at lagoons, confinement building fans and confinement building curtains. SES conducted air and lagoon sampling during the OSI technology testing in Utah.  In addition, SES identified and recruited innovative technology developers and vendors to participate in the Utah testing.

Animal Manure Lagoon Evaluations

Seaboard Farms and Land O’ Lakes

July 1999 and March 2000

SES conducted evaluations of several hog production lagoons in Oklahoma in response to new state regulations.  The evaluations consisted of a review of associated records, an on-site visual evaluation, and a certification by a SES Licensed Professional Engineer.

Air Quality Environmental Impact Facts

NPPC

November 1998 to 1999

SES compiled atmospheric impact and loading information from across the United States.  SES used this data to determine the relative atmospheric contribution from pork production, compared with other agricultural and non-agricultural sources, for the following: greenhouse gases (methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide); nitrogen deposition; and health effects of atmospheric ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and pathogens.  The NPPC planned to use the information to develop fact sheets regarding the overall contribution of pork production, relative to other sources, to the atmospheric conditions described above.

Odor Measurement Technology Presentation

Missouri Agricultural Consortium

April 1998

SES gave a presentation on the current status of odor measurement technologies on behalf of the Missouri Agricultural Consortium to the Missouri CAFO Odor Issues Workgroup, a task force consisting of agricultural groups, environmental groups, regulators and elected officials. The purpose of the presentation was to provide an independent evaluation of state-of-the-art odor measurement technologies.
